O Dia dos Namorados The Day of Sweethearts

Today is the equivalent of Saint Valentine's in Brazil. It is the eve of Saint Anthony's. I am sure he existed, was Portuguese and a contemporary of Saint Francis of Asisi, but I do know he works miracles for the lonely hearts. And for those who have lost things around the house. Saint Anthony's starts a period of evening fêtes in the interior of the country, with pretty paper banners, corn-on-the-cob, bonfires, squaredances, fake gun-point weddings, with a pregnant bride and a hick husband, both at the vigilant look of Dad with an old rifle, she carrying a cauliflower for bouquet.

Tonight, the men or women who want to, may check this out. Write the names of people and fold them in little pieces. Put the names in a glass of water. If you are that desperate, make it a bucket of water and a thousand names.

In the morning the name that is unfolded is the name of the one you'll marry or shack up with. Serious. In my case, four names unfolded. I am still waiting for the other two losers. True, I shouldn't have filled a whole bathtub of water.

You may also place an egg white in a glass of water. Plain water. Okay, Evian if you live in NYC. In the morning you will see a shape. Concentrate and interpret this shape. It reveals where you will find that special person.

If you have lost something in the house, like a husband who has dropped drunk behind the couch, don't lose your faith in Santo Antônio! Place his image upside down. You will soon find that loser. Do the courtesy of putting Santo Antônio back up. After all, he is a cool saint in helping people find so much as a little bit of love in their lives. Don't wait for Saint John's, the 24th, or Peter and Paul's, the 29th. Partying in Brazil will go on till then but the chance for love is tonight!
