Orkut is a relationship site Google created in 2004. Theoretically, it would be a safe place. Only those invited by members could enter. The profiles had to be real, with real names and photos. Maybe due to the gregarious nature of Brazilians, they soon became 74% of Orkut memebers. Orkut has communities. Communities of Green Day fans, Nirvana fans, futebol club fans. Of Cariocas, of Paulistas, of people who graduated from this or that other school. Families, such as my Brazilian family.
Then there are the I hate ____ communities. In these one can find inocuous "I hate " such as waking up early in the morning to "emos" or "metal."
Things get hairier when the I hate communities involve:
A) Racism
B) Nazis
C) Xenophobia
D) Gays and Lesbians
This year the Federal Public Ministery was able to bring Google down to its knees when it threatened to shut Orkut down. To this day nobody knows why Google keeps a losing proposition open. Theoretically anything posted on Orkut belongs to Google. What do you do with garbage? That is what there is on Orkut.
After the MPF intervened, especially in other crime scenarios, such as organized crime on Orkut and Pedophilia, many people started winning cases against people who had committed injury, calumny or defamation on Orkut.
Suddenly, last week, a judge ruled Google couldn't be aware of what goes on inside Orkut and a woman suffering all of the above lost her suit. Yo, judge! Don't you know what Google does besides selling ads? Indexing
How can Google or anyone else claim Google wouldn't know what goes on in Orkut?
We live in days of extreme ignorance and hipocrisy. Music tomorrow. I was a victim of abuse in Orkut a year ago this August. A blogger friend of mine asked for help to shut down a "I Hate People with Down Syndrome" community. I can read the TOS. They are in English. How many Brasileiros know what to do?
