Why do men go to war? Long gone are the days of little groups organized to bash each others' skulls (2001, A Space Odissey.) Men are sent to war by governments. Ron Paul, the libertarian in the GOP says he is against wars. So am I, my friend. At this point so are we all.

The USA goes into war for raw products, oil, for example, territorial conquests, remember the Alamo, now to maintain its role of Big Brother around the world.

Some say we are the most violent society on earth. Maybe. We do have a sense of respect for others' boundaries within our society. I like that. No nosing around, even if it sticks and Dahmer is inside.

Today I am thrilled the AMA finally took its first steps to regulate vidiots games. Many have died of addiction. We'll see.

Is this a good thing or bad? Last week I spent almost everyday inside MBLog. The ambiance is similar tothat of the NYSE, as picctured in "Trading Places."

It can be exhilarating; it can be exhausting. I happen to get tired easily; CFS.

The star blog in this site is The Thinking Blog. A very attractive lay-out, eye-candy for bloggers on the sidebar, this is a professional blog. It's worth a visit.

The site MyBlogLog seems to be sponsored by Yahoo and Technorati. It's a big market place. I like to see new stuff; I don't want to have a commercial blog just yet.

I have been listening to French videos, some in Catalán, some in Spanish, some funny Guignol ones, some serious accusations against the candidate of law and order, selective immigration, welfare cuts, sound familiar. The main difference between Sarkozy and Bush is Sarkozy's impecable French, pure Parisian, and our leader's faulty syntax and awkward pronunciation at times.

Their agenda is the same. Should Sarkozy win tomorrow, what do the French expect? More of the same, really. He is in the government, he is clearly undemocratic...

As for Ségolène Royal, when I hear people saying they are the same, I feel shivers down my spine. That was the USA Green Party's logic in 2000. We well know what happened.

It has been a crazy time in our lives, this second semester. This is not an excuse, just a fact. I would like to talk about an old film made in Brazil, a 1959 production by Roberto Farias, who became a very successful producer and auteur.

In this film, shot in São Paulo, a very young Reginaldo Farias ( brother ) is a small-time robber, who never killed anyone. He is made into a dangerous Enemy Number One by both the press and the police. Young Gloria Meneses, who later became a novela queen, falls in love with him. His buddies, among them Milton Gonçalves, the African-descent actor who was at a very important award ceremony here in the USA, are being chased by the police.

Why do they decide to chase these bandits whose image the press and cops fabricated to diverge the attention of the public from the real problems in the city? Birdie ( R.Farias) has become very popular. The people make fun of the cops. This must come to an end.

After a brief interlude when Birdie and his girl live a few moments of happiness, this happiness comes to an end. He is sent to prison.

Worthwhile mentioning are the chiaro/oscuro effects, clearly sucked from film noir, the foreshadowing of the situation of the poor in slums in Rio or São Paulo. This film preceded City of God by 43 years. Without the special effects and violence of the latter, Cidade Ameaçada stays in your mind for days after you have seen it.

Initially I had planned to write about film noir, there is so much to write about the genre. Besides, I love it.

However, the circumstances of politics in Brazil, the friends I spoke with before Sunday's elections, their differences now, when thirty years ago we were all united against the military Redeemer, for the creation of the workers' party, Partido dos Trabalhadores, made me choose "City of God," instead.

In 2002 I flew to Rio on a cheap-o flight with United. Old time friends were finally getting married, after having lived together over a couple of decades. If I would be lucky I would be in Rio for Lula's victory. Unfortunately he had to go for a second round.

Monday morning I got a call about the silencing of Rio, beach area included, small bombs in Ipanema, machine gun threats, unusual violence for the folks who live at the beat of bossa nova, boats, the beach, easy affluence. I boarded my cheap-o United flight anyway. This time I stayed in Laranjeiras, the wedding would be in Tijuca. My host knows so many people it's ridiculous to go for a walk with him. He's gladslapped every two steps of the way. He was invited to go to a preview of City of God. I invited the photographer who is a character in the film, Rogerio Reis, the actual photographer for Jornal do Brasil at Cidade de Deus in the seventies to eighties, his better-half, a friend. This is typical brasileiro fashion; invite one, twenty will show up.

Anthony Lane, one of the crrrrretins at the New Yorker, had nothing but despise for the film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lunt. He said the best actor in the film was the chicken.Trailler

The film shows how crime gets more and more sophisticated and criminals younger as time goes by, poverty unresolved, temptations stronger, from the late sixties to eighties. In the late sixties, the hoodlums resort to stealing petty cash from the truck delivering bottled gas. In a motel hold-up something goes wrong. Little kids murder a couple.

The older hoodlums are killed, younger ones take over. The cycle is an ongoing one. Life is cheap if you are poor. Cocaine makes it grand appearance. Middle class kids mingle with the ones from Cidade de Deus, a project of relocation of the poor from the beach area, a project never quite completed in its infra-structure. It's a City of Hell.

The really young kids, 9-10 years old take over in the end, kill the really mean guy, Li'l Zé. And they swear they aren't afraid of that guy, Comando Vermelho. Comando Vermelho was a group of organized traffickers of dope and guns.

It is true Fernando Meirelles is a product of commercials, as were the brothers Tony and Riddley Scott. It might have been this apect of the filmography that A. Lane didn't like. Camera angles in every-which-way, zooms, turn-around, 360 degrees.

I thoroughly enjoyed it when I saw it in Rio. I brought my husband to see it at the Cinerama Dome, aka Arclight Cinema. At this festival a lot of people walked out during the film. I myself felt more unsettled with the violence on the screen when watching the film here in Los Angeles.

Katia Lunt was the coach for all the kids, there are maybe one hundred of them. It's fascinating to hear about how she worked with all the children. Unlike the producers of Pixote, the people who generated Cidade de Deus are following through with the kids to try to avoid a tragic ending for them.

This is a heavy duty film about an unpleasant reality of one of the bottom three countries in wealth distribution. Sonia Braga's niece, Maria Alice, plays a small part. It is a must see for people here in the USA to think of what happens when all the wealth goes to that one per cent of the population. Don't forget to vote!

Double Indemnity and Film Noir

Just this weekend we were all huddled around the big screen TV watching "Double Indemnity." My husband and I for the nth time, our son for the second time. Now he can better follow the dialog and the plot, much better than when he was nine or ten. We love the movie. Imagine Barbara Stanwick, whose legs were gorgeous, well, her figure in 1943 was great, wearing dresses and slacks designed by the Queen of costume design in Hollywood, Edith Head.

In those days actors had to memorize their lines and the lines were exquisite works of art. The wit that drips out of every bit of dialog in this film is mortal, yet pleasant. My husband and I have memorized big chunks of the dialog. And yet the film is still quite a pleasure to watch. There is always a detail we missed or a flaw we think existed in the plot but the plot is flawless.

Just check it out: book by James Cain, screenplay by Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder, who directs the film.

This is one of the seminal film noirs. The name of the genre, so to speak, was given by the French way before the Americans knew that was what they were doing. Not always is the film noir about a bad dame who seduces a fool to kill her husband ( for money is a plus) After watching the film I went to Wikipedia and there I learned there are as many variations on film noir as types of suicide Edward G. Robinson had to spit out in the movie. ( Some say he never forgave Billy Wilder for that monolog )

If you have never seen Double Indemnity, do yourself a favor and rent the brand new DVD out there. There are observations in the film that are pretty amusing for us in Los Angeles. "It was a house of the type that is popular here, with Spanish tiles, going for at least 30 thousand dollars." Fred MacMurray claims there were two movies in which he had to act in his whole career: this one and The Apartment, also by Billy Wilder.

Of course THE CODE had to spoil our fun watching the bad girls plotting murders. They came back, though. This is my tip for the week in film. for more info, google film noir in wikipedia. See you next week!

After keeping tabs wih Google Non-Sense, both in Brazil and in Belgium, hey, third world was in good company, and after reading a great paper by a professor from Unisinos, Brazil, about the Brazilian Invasion in the Internet, I could better understand the episode of vaandalism which terminated two blogs of mine and scarred me forever.

A sucker is born everyday. I hope the sucker in me died. If you could see how hateful the little rascals are. If you could ever imagine how much filth runs in their minds, you'd be wondering about the future of Brazil. They are racist, xenophobes, prejudiced, age-ists, mysogenous, no-sense of politics, or of their being poor people who could use some help.

They live in a world of dreams of consumers' society: nice cars, stereos, games and more games. One of them wrote me:

I love to hate you because to me you are not a person. You are in the virtual world, which makes it easier for me to hate you.

When I think it's all past me some idiot drop me mail; one sent me an .exe e-mail.
